The accident probably happened on the narrow-gauge route, which has two switchbacks:

But I didn't know they had a route out to the beach.  I'm assuming this is the old SP standard-gauge route.  We used to walk along this track as kids when camping nearby.  Every once-in-a-while a train came and we had to run off of one of the bridges, which had no catwalk:

Hopefully no one seriously hurt. Hopefully the railroad will survive the enevitable litigation.
