The Humboldt Bay & Eureka Model Railroad Club has existed in the same location in Eureka for ~ 40 years.  The large HO layout is freelanced but with many scenes based on NWP locations.

The club typically meets each Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.  Visitors are welcome.  Open house occurs during Veterans' Day and Rhododendron Days weekends.

Fall Open House

Please note that the HBE Model Railroad Club Veterans' Day open house the weekend of November 7-8.  The clubhouse will be open from 12-5 each day.  Adult admission is $3.  Children under 10 are free.

This would be an excellent chance to see the most recent winners of model contests at the SPH&TS convention last month.  Greg Hodges (Freshwater) won the steam locomotive category for the 6th year in a row.  He made a wonderfully detailed MT2 in HO scale.  Tom Bethune (Arcata) won the color photograph contest with his view of the Bakersfield roundhouse at dawn in the 1970s.   And Wes Fulton (Blue Lake) won the caboose and freight car contests and came in third in the passenger car category.  His caboose featured a complete interior and removable roof.  The freight cars were flats with PMT trailers.  The passenger car was an SP dome with complete interior including interior wall murals.

Come and see these and many other excellent models at this open house.

Check out the February issue of Model Railroader for a great photo of the HB&E.  Local photographer and former SP hogger Thomas Bethune took a nice photo on our layout and submitted it to the magazine's Trackside Photos section.

Tom's photo was also reproduced in the Sunday January 19 issue of the Times-Standard newspaper on page B1.

Wow! With the touch of a button I have rejoined the Humboldt Bay &Eureka Model RR Club. I have been absent since Mar1998. Time flies with one divorce, two wars, several conflicts, ........ I am on my last tour here in Afghanistan. Yeah!

Just back from the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society convention in Fresno.  It was a great event with over 200 attending.  Two of our club members won first place awards for their models.  Tom Cockle won first in the passenger car category for his highly detailed model of the business car "Redwood."  Greg Hodges was first in the steam locomotive category for his Southern Pacific P-8.  This was his fourth first place in five years (He didn't attend one year).  He also was first in the Pacific Fruit Express category.

Our next open house is Veterans' Day weekend.  This would be a great time to come meet these expert modelers and see their creations.

Look for a Tom Bethune photo of the HB&E layout in and upcoming issue of Model Railroader.  Tom recently submitted one of his excellent photos and they accepted it for publication.  This is the club's 40th year at 7th and A in Eureka.

Great open house.  Highlights included an operating mainline Southern Pacific logging train, Southern Pacific fire train, Golden State, Eureka Southern, and the Santa Fe San Diegan among other trains.  Sorry many kids were crying when their parents said it was time to leave.  Hope to se them again at the next open house in April 2013.

The club will also have our 20x40 foot modular layout at The Great Train Expo in Santa Rosa February 16-17, 2013

Thanks for the information Ronald. I would love to see your layout sometime...I enjoy model railroading, but so far as a lone wolf.

I am sure we have probably met at your last open house...this time I will introduce myself to you.

Devin:  The club has no current plan to switch to DCC.  DCC will probably have to wait until or if the club ever moves to a different location.  However in my case I have a layout that will run either DC or DCC so I run my DCC locomotives there.

The new double track main line is still a work in progress.  The person installing it has been quite busy with work but hope to devote time in December to completing the project.
