Three Way SMART Train Meet In Petaluma | 2-18-2017

I went over to Caulfield lane to catch 103 and 108 southbound expecting a high speed pass but they stopped short of the crossing. A few minuets later, 104 and 101 came around the corner but also stopped. Right after 104 and 101 arrived, I heard a third horn. Sure enough, a third set, 105 and 106, came into view and stopped in front of 104 and 101. Within minuets of each other, all three DMU sets headed back north making for great video opportinity.

Seeing as how are new U.S.Administration wants to put Americans ( naturalized, naturally) there should be no problem getting funds to re-open the line north. Problem being that that money would have to be taken from defense allocated moneys so that we ( U.S.) can NEVER LOSE another war. Amen!! We can only pray that are future wars are like the short skirmish we had in Granada. 

NO WARS LONGER THAN A WEEK. Historically, most generals have assumed that the war they were to embark upon would be of less than a month or 2 duration. HOW often was that the case?  

Anyway the funds should be available to win all wars if above criteria are met.  

Put  pressure on your congress persons and state reps to get funds for SMART and NWP. 

Why does SMART hate freight? If Chad's assumption is correct.

It's already been 20yrs since wheels touched rail in Healdsburg or anywhere north. Seems like yesterday in my mind. When/if Smart ever gets to Cloverdale it would be great to run excursions but they seem to hate freight already so I doubt they would allow it. I've mentioned before how awesome to run excursions from Cloverdale to Hopland, Ukiah and Willits through the Russian River Canyon but the cost of fixing that segment just would be too high I fear. We can always dream. I took a speader trip right after the line was closed from Willits to Cloverdale and back. It's something I will never forget and only hope people will have the chance to do it again some day

 It's kind of a bummer if GGRM is only temporary in our area, hopefully they'll stay permanently. 

In any case if it's on our NWP or NVRR it's still really cool to think about live steam in the North Bay. 

I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed,but not holding my breath..

 Wouldn't it be a great dream to ride behind live steam from Healdsburg to Willits for a connection with CWR to Fort Bragg? Probably won't ever happen in my lifetime, but what an amazing tourist draw it would be. 

 Let's all  keep up pressure on our elected officials so we can get the funding for an eventual reopening of the line to Cloverdale and beyond..

I am perfectly willing to admit that this  site is narrow-minded if not narrow gaged if I understand correctly. Rome also burned while Nero fiddled.. Politics Trumps All when a clear and present danger is afoot. 

Does the present administraion taken a stand on SMART? Any funding from rhe Feds? Any monies going into NWPR?

What happens when SMART opens?  How will NWPR fit? All freights at night after SMART shuts down for night?  What about weekends?   Is there contingency plans if freight needs to be moved during the day?  Are shippers to be at mercy of SMART?  Are  there any passing sidings? If so, how long and where are their locations?     

Did the above questions relate to SMART and NWPR? Am I in the permitted zone?

Steven Richard Bell, please keep all comments focused on railroading and avoid any mention of current politics (this goes for everyone, really).  There are some here who agree with you and some who do not, but broaching any recent political topic is a certain lose-lose proposition on the network, regardless of your point of view.  We have a relatively narrow subject matter interest here (NWP, SMART, railroading, etc.) and all comments should reflect that.  Regards,

George,   From what i've read and heard the stop over for GGRM looks temporary.   I would seriously doubt SMART will allow them to run excursions on their portion although to Novato/Napa from Sonoma would draw some riders.  How about a trip on the Wine train pulled by steam?  There was also talk of them going to healdsburg and running north but who knows at this point.

Thanks for the info concerning Alaska airlines serving Seattle. May hop (or June hop) aboard here in Seattle and come down to visit with all those of you who have enjoyed my humor over the years. Not as big a joke as our last (Hopefully only latest) Presidential election.  Too bad TR/// and not The T.R. can't go to the correspondents dinner in Washington. Seems as though he just might be a bit of a cowardly bully---but not like the bully pulpit of T.R. and other great presidents.

That's awesome! SC airport is a the only way to go.

As for smart, riders are riders, they need to make sure they don't just focus on daily commuters in order to be relevant to its potential customers. 

I'm really curious if there are any details on an operating agreement with GGRM.

There must be steam and diesel excursion service coming,I'm pretty sure the move to Sonoma isn't just for a restoration and storage facility..

I had heard they were coming and low and behold the PD had an article today announcing it.  it looks like 3 flights a day to SFO.  Small regional jets.  I had no idea it would be that many.  Looks like they need to get that terminal upgraded quick :)

as a train relevant side note,  people from south will be able to jump on SMART and take a shuttle to the airport from the Airport Blvd station.  Might be a small number but.....
