This is definitely the second fatality, and third serious accident.  Whether or not this was a second suicide probably won't be announced today.

I believe this accident occurred some distance from a crossing, so quiet zone status isn't applicable, but I'm all for ending quiet zones.

Bob, this is the second. Earlier in the year there was a confirmed suicide on Hearn Ave in Santa Rosa. I would like to see SMART temporarily remove quiet zones which could prevent accidents like the truck vs train, bicyclist vs train and possibly this one.

Actually, I believe this was actually the first fatality for SMART, although there have been a couple of other collisions. One too many, in any event.

The latest police report is that this was believed to be a suicide. ; As time goes on, I am afraid that we will see many more such incidents. For some reason, stepping in front of a fast-moving train holds an attraction for people wishing to end their own lives. CalTrain on the Peninsula averages somewhere around one suicide a month on their ROW. Perhaps SMART might consider a self-imposed "blackout" of news releases about such deaths, as the Golden Gate Bridge District did some years ago when the death toll on the bridge was approaching number 2000. It seems to have reduced the number of jumpers since.

It isn't just the tragic consequences for the suicide and their families and friends, but the emotional toll on train crews is heavy as well.

  I know what that is like. I was on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train this year, July 21st. The lead unit was Union Pacific #844. Returning from Cheyenne to Denver. The lady was right in the middle of the tracks trying to get that great close up picture on her smart phone. The engineer blow his whistle and went to emergence. But a 21 car train traveling at 60 mph will not stop on a dime. It was not pretty. Also in case you were wondering this was not a suicide attempt.
