It seems that the joint NWP/SMART operating agreement requires NWP to stage cars on the wye in Ignacio during the day and then switch Petaluma businesses in the dead of night when they are allowed onto the SMART route.  (Anyone know what time?  Does anyone know how much time they are allowed on the SMART line?)

Before SMART, didn't NWP switch their entire line in one go?  Why don't they do that now, just start much later?

Let's say NWP is allowed to enter the SMART mainline at midnight.  Why not bring the cars straight in from Schellville (or Lombard) starting at 11:00 PM?  I'm sure there's a reason, but wouldn't this be better than shuttling crews to/from Ignacio?  This would prevent breaking up a job that takes less than a full day into to pieces.

Might it be becuase NWP doesn't want to cross Brazos, the Carneros Hwy (twice), Wingo, hwy. 37, Black Point, or a few other misc. crossings at night, especially in bad weather?  I'm looking for the rationale for this burdensome operating plan.

Anyone know?

I posted a status last Monday re NWP 2009 with several grain cars pointed towards Shellville but tied down at Novato wye.  Can't find it in the history however.

But it sounds like there is a lot of recent tariff traffic going in and out of Petaluma.  Good news.
