Hi Chad,

Upper level for the view and excitement. Lower level for quiet and more privacy. Spend a good amount of time in the lounge car. Great views on both sides of the car. Splurge on a meal in the diner, you get to sit with strangers who are soon friends.

Too far to walk but there are plenty of cabs right around there and it is a fairly short drive. You might also ask if the Nugget has a shuttle of some sort.

Thanks for the replies, guys! We've decided on just doing Martinez to Reno and back, due to some time constraints with work and because it seems much more recommended.

Cory, How far from Sparks does the train let you off if our tickets are for Reno? That sounds like a lot of fun.

Now the real questions! Do you recommend upper or lower level seating?

I would fly to Denver and take the CZ back to Emeryville. Best rail journey in the west.... Go through the rockies and the sierras in daylight. One night on the train, but to save $'s, you can sleep in a coach seat. I know your dad and he would enjoy the trip too. Another nice trip if you don't want to sleep on the train is the Starlight to Santa Barbara.

I second the Zephyr and also the Sparks Nugget. Overlooks Sparks Yard and you can request a room with that view. A fun trip.

Cali Zephyr over Donner Pass from Richmod to Reno. Stay at Harrahs in Downtown Reno or John Ascuagas Nugget in Sparks. Come back whenever you want in that case lol
