Dedicated to Sharing the Heritage of Redwood Empire Railroading

A while back, I purchased a book entitled "Against All Odds" by Amalie H Langmueller. I picked up the book locally. It is a murder mystery, with the NWP in the background. I believe that mention was made that the NWP station. in Santa Rosa (railroad square), had passenger service up until sometime in the 1950's. Growing up in nearby Sebastopol, I can't remember passenger service as late as the 1950's..I thought passenger service was discontinued sometime in the 1940's.

Can anyone tell me that last year that the Santa Rosa NWP station took on passengers? Thanks. R Hill.

Per Vol 2 of the NWP by Fred Stindt, the last pass. train, The Redwood, ran the last time on Nov. 9, 1958. There was still service from Willits to Eureka until May 25,1959.
Vol 1 & 2 are very nice hardbound books which are very well done.
They may be very hard to locate, but worth the trouble.

I know the passenger train aleast until November 30, 1956. I still have my ticket. It cost $1.41 from Healdsburg to San Rafael My Mother rode for free as she still had her pass. Her Father (my Grandfather) was a Conductor on that run from the early 20's until the late 30's.

I am pretty sure the last time would have been RDC rail car #10 right around when Amtrak took over passenger service nationwide in the early 70's. Elsewise, a real honest to goodness multi-car passenger train hasn't been seen since the 40's with declining traffic into the 50's when it wasn't uncommon to see one coach pulled by a SD-7 as the passenger service.

Cheers,

Cory

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. I don't ever remember seeing a passenger train, after we moved to Sebastopol in 1947. I would be interested in any info you can dig up. Thanks. Dick.

I know that it might have been 1972, when the last BUDD ran, but i don't think that was the entire line.
Also, i know that the redwood ran until 1958, and in 1962, the BUDD took over.
Thats all i know,

Richard, I took a quick look through the two Stindt books but didn't find a definitive date for the end of passenger service through and/or terminating at the Santa Rosa Station. That information is probably in one of the books but I'll need to take a closer look. There must be someone on this network who has the date in his/her head, but I'll keeping looking round the web until the information surfaces, one way or the other. Regards,

Mark D.
