Dedicated to Sharing the Heritage of Redwood Empire Railroading
Hello all. While I don't think anyone here particularly cares about minor railroads in states on the other side of the country, I just have to express my dismay with my old home state and the sorry state of its rail infrastructure, not too dissimilar with that of the NWP not too long ago. Plus, the New England railroad forum that I used to contribute to is defunct thanks to stupid bickering, trolling, poor management and horrible design.…Continue
It's being stripped down and having metal work done and then being coated. It's going to be shipped in pieces to Petaluma and then put together on site. Shimmick Construction was said to be the contractor for this phase of work. …Continue
From Last months minutes which were just published:
Jake Park updated the Board on a possible new switch which would service additional Lagunitas barley deliveries, as well as a wine warehouse, and a new company that will provide barley for the breweries which would remove 600-800 trucks off the road per month.
In todays Sacramento Bee (5-4-14) CP National RR is recruiting for Trainmasters and Conductors. I thought that was a bit odd they'd be advertising way down here!
During my time in Vietnam some other guys and myself.....'rails' wrote some poetry from our time on the railroads before being called up....we were all in the combat engineers in Pleiku, 20th Battalion. I had worked out of Bayshore yards in SF on the Coast Division, and penned this free verse one night.
"We sat in the shanty,...After making the drive (from 3rd and Townscend HQ); The crewmen kept busy, the trains were alive. We walked to the platform, amidst the great…Continue
We acquired 101 on our trip to LA last month. It's our first official Pasito Southern locomotive; formerly AT&SF. It's been converted to burn oil; ladders have been added for access to the oil tank and weathered.…

I cleaned the locomotive with Windex on a make-up sponge, while wearing disposable gloves. I do this on all weathering projects to remove fingerprints/dust etc. I masked the lights; windows; the speaker grills under the fuel tank and the area between the truck side-frames including the wheels. I then sprayed Model Masters flat finish.…Continue
I just came across this. I'm sure many of you have seen it, but it has some amazing photos. I'm still wading through them though so can't comment completely. Dave S. will love this, although I bet he's seen it already.Continue
There are some good pictures.
The author asserts that some of the rails and ties are from the 1920's but that doesn't soudn right to me. Don't ties only last 20-30 years? And don't rails have to be pulled out too because they weaken through interal…Continue
At the NCRA Board of Directors meeting today, NCRA will be presented with an estimate to repair the rail line from Windsor to Redwood Valley, which is North of Ukiah. In the report, NCRA will be presented with four different scenarios, and will decide which repair scenario is the most economical for them to proceed with.
Not specific to NWP but if you have not already seen the show on KQED TV, this is a must see. It is the story of the last outing of the Roseville based 1929 vintage SP/UP rotary snowplows on Donner Summit during the 2011 heavy snow storms. It is a 60 minute show and it is wonderful including the sound of the plow's steam whistles plus the engine sounds of the F7's that provide the electrical power for the rotary blades.
Brought up the hair on the back of my neck.
Putting out a note to the forum: I will be actively setup and demonstrating a fully operation HO Free-mo layout with Northern California Free-mo (http://free-mo.org/norcalfreemo) this weekend in part for the Great Train Expo in Santa Rosa. If you are in the area please drop by and say "HI!"
We plan on setting up in this configuration:
A couple photos of our layout:…
Woundering if anyone out there that might have driven or hike to the Island Mountain area that can give me advise on how to get there safely from Hwy101. Looking sometime this spring on coming to the area and would love to see that part of the north side of the NWP, and if their anyone interested coming along please let me know!
I just saw the train running by the downtown depot on my way home 15 minutes ago. Night Running!
Headed north with some hoppers, a gondola, and bulkhead flats for lumber.
Any Idea where they are going and are they returning tonight?
These locomotives were parked here in 1997, after the northern part of the line shut down due to no money, and a lot of issues with the environment.
Ever since early 1997, these trains have been slowly rotting away, due to rain and other weather in Eureka, and they are covered in graffiti. We want to save them, because these kind of locomotives are extremely rare now a days. (Correct me if I'm wrong)…
DID YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT THE U.P. 4014 THE NEXT 5 YEARS OR SO GANA BE UP AND RUNING
