The (Redwood) Empire Strikes Back

Alright guys, so I have a friend who works for a software development company that produces performance engines for video games, in addition they also make add-ons for various train simulators. Crazy Idea to Reopen Entire Line

Now I know every once in a while somebody gets a crazy idea to make the line viable all the way to Humboldt, most of which involve gravel, containers, donkeys, etc. But has anyone ever considered that what would be most likely to open the line is not freight at all? I'm not talking an excursion train. I'm not talking about bringing back the North Coast Daylight or the Budd car from the dead here. I'm talking about intercity rail here. wow, sounds like main line railroading might not be the best option for me, more like shortline work or just not get into railroading altogether. I might just stick to railfanning and model railroading and instead try and become an electrician  or better yet work for the locomotive maintainence or track maintenance department of a railroad

regarding hazmat rules, how many cars are you required to have between any occupied locomotive or caboose and any hazmat car? does this number vary between switching and locals? and does an unoccupied locomotive in an MU consist count as something between an occupied locomotive and a hazmat car?

Thanks for the reply and info.  Amtrack kind of scary as each president and congress want to mess with it. BNSF should be pretty good company to work for. Do they still have senority roster and if so are you are high enough?.  As you know the decades back rosters were full of the real old guys because they cut out all the young ones when they went from steam to diesel.  But all that must  have passed by now making it more balanced. That is, IF they even have them

Went to same train expo sunday. never been to one in my life. So impressed with current technology. Looking at photos, you must be modeler .   The new DCC stuff is incredible.  Our old HO was so bad, rubber band drives etc. Wind up key was more reliable  Plastic wheels derailed, some because track poorly set. dead spots account loose joiners etc. Now, do you spend alot of time at it?

Why would they want a six axle for a yard switching job? I would think they are best suited for road/switching? Also, none of my business, but in previous comment you said "if you have it your way, you won't be there much longer". Being curious, does that mean you are tranferring or getting out of railroading?
