"Jerry, thanks for the response, it must have been fun to operate on NWP back in the glory days, Wish i was born back then, I missed out. The line closed during the first year of my life, and I was too young to see any trains on this line."

"I really don't think we will ever see a train north of Willits again. Most of the tunnels are caved in or in need of major work. Island Mt. will have to be bypassed as the whole mountain has shifted. The roadbed is pretty much gone. The rail…"

"what year was this taken? It is rather sad that this tunnel is collapsed now, and the tracks are slowly fading away. Let's make sure that this is not just a memory that is long since past, and get the trains running up north again!"

"Not sure sure they were "glory" days. We spent a lot of time on bad track from Dos Rios to Fort Seaward going 10 mph on truly crummy track. Willits to Island Mountain swap trains and back to Willits took 12 hours. In 1985 we could go from…"

Special movement of some of the passenger cars, for a special at Eureka. The track was in bad shape at Bell Springs and we needed idler cars, because of the dip in the track. The RS-1 was leased and is running backwards.

"Not to put too fine a point on the paint brand name, but its Tru-Color. I use it a lot and really like it. Its a solvent based paint and dries quickly. They say you can mask it in 15 minutes, but I always give it an hour or so or even over night if…"

"Hi Dave, Normally if we had only one engine we could pull 21 loads into Willits. 40 cars and two engines is much easier, especially if the rail is wet. Most of the very short steep grades are not as long as a 40 car train so its not as hard of a…"

"Jerry:  I'm counting roughly 40 cars and just two units pulling.  Is that enough power to get into Willits?  Is the route fairly flat?"

I've been an NWP fan for something like 35 years, but mostly of the south end, below Novato.  Lately I've been "exploring" the north end using Google Earth and via great pictures like yours of the Eel River Cyn.  That route looks stunningly beautiful!  I would love to hike the whole length of that canyon and camp along the RoW some summer.

You posted some great pictures.  Would love to see more if you have them, even of yards or other ES facilities.  Looks like you had some decent length trains -- in the day.

Happy New Year!

Hi Jerry,

I see you are in Willits .... me too. I am the Yardmaster at this time. That mostly involves security and minor repair. I also am an employee of the Cal-west, so I am able to get out on the line occasionally.

Jerry, jpg images are definitely a supported format and should just upload automatically, like gif, png, and a couple other image formats. If you want you can mail the image to mark@drury.com and I can look at the binary source to see if there's any corruption or the like. But in general, if you can see the image in a browser or other image viewing application, it should upload to this network with no problems.

And the "Eureka Southern" album you created for the image above is perfect (album names are completely your choice when uploading your own images, and you can add them to existing albums if they seem a good fit). In the description of your photos you may wish to add that you were the photographer, just so other members know the true source of those images (but only if you like, of course). Regards,

Mark D.
