Here is a photo of 5280 in better times! This was taken in the summer of 1958. She had just come in off a freight from Willits, being serviced at the sanding and fueling track leading to the roundhouse.

This is Eureka in the summer of 1958. It's better to be lucky than good! I was shooting with my brother's Argus C-3 with Kodachrome film. I was 14 and had NO idea what I was doing! This is the main lead to the turntable for the roundhouse. I believe that diesel fuel went directly from the tank car to the engines, using a pump. If you blow it up you can see the hose. The big black tank, I believe, is where they stored sand! In the Schuster aerial photos, circa early 1959's, there is a large ground level tank there for bunker C fuel oil for steam engines. There is also a steam engine that I think is being used for steam next to it. The corrugated steel structure next to the tank appears to the air supply to move sand up to the sanding tower.
Much of this is of the "I believe" kind of information. I have never been able to find documentation for any of it. Written information for our favorite road is thin indeed!
Richard, another super photo. What town is this? Did diesel fuel come directly from the tank car behind the sand house? Do you remember if that black structure (to the left) was a water tank?
