Thanks Cory.  That looks very similar to what is likely inside.  I have yet to take it apart to find out.

Should have mentioned I disabled the connection by cutting near the truck screw as part of that too.

I believe this is the right mechanism for your car but you can pop the shell to make sure. I had an all dome Amtrak car that had this design. I did end up mounting a standard #5 draft gear box and a plastic shim for height with an extended shank coupler Kadee #26. It worked just fine so it sounds as if you are on the right track. The length difference between the #5 and #26 is fairly negligible (.1")so you could try the 5 and if it doesn't track well around corners change it out for the 26. Have fun :)

Yea, this one turns as the truck turns.  I'm not sure if it is all one piece or not.  I ordered some Kadee #5 couplers to see if I can rig that up.  Not sure if that will work or not.

Is this one of those coupler boxes that turns so the cars can negotiate sharper curves? If it turns independently of the trucks you could always cut off the coupler box and install a new one with an extended shank coupler. It might be the easier way to go. I'll look through my extra couplers tomorrow and see if I have one of the 20/30 series.

Thank you Cory.  I've been over these images from Kadee and it is hard to tell by the non photo images if it will fit the screw size.  I have found replacements for the tiny plastic pin couplers and the larger screws but this screw size is somewhere in between.  It is smaller than the 9/32" coupler holes that I have.  I may just have to order some at random.  I'm hoping I'll come across someone who has had to replace this type of coupler before.

HI Joshua, try the Kadee conversion page:

I'm not sure if you are looking at a normal Bachmann or a Spectrum model but they should have something in the 20 or 30 series with an adapter that should work.

Good luck :)

Any modeler know what knuckle coupler can be used to replace Bachmann horn hook couplers that screw in? I have been unable to find a coupler with the correct size hole...
