How long has this crane been here? It looks like it's in great shape. All the wires and the boom are there, and it doesn't seem like people have messed with it.

There are plenty of tunnels on each side of Dos Rios, so I assume the overall dimensions of this unit allow it to squeeze through them, with the boom lowered, of course.

Mike:  so you witnessed the power pole take-down as it happened?  Or the aftermath?  Either way, I could see how that event would leave an impression!

I think I was like 5 years old and the EUREKA SOUTHERN was dragging him around the Samoa/Manila area and they left the boom too far up because they didn't have enough idler cars... any who this bad boy took out a power line and two power poles...  At 5 was scared to death... at 30 looking back it makes me laugh to see the crew panic like that...

Hi folks, thanks for the comments.  Not sure of the age of this crane but it looks to me like it was part of the RR MoW gear right up to the day of abandonment.  I took many more photos in the Dos Rios area and will post them soon.

The site is not very hard to reach, just take the highway 162  for Covelo when traveling north on 101 out of Willits.  Then follow signs for Dos Rios, cross the Eel River over the bridge and you are there.  I actually got there the hard way on a very minor county road out of Laytonville -it is gravel and mud most of the way.  The NWP main line is visible along the Eel for quite a way in this area.

this shot shows that the ball of the crane is still there and all the wires etc. man, wish we could get this down to petaluma somehow and display it somewhere. how old is it?
