Jerry, thanks for the response, it must have been fun to operate on NWP back in the glory days, Wish i was born back then, I missed out. The line closed during the first year of my life, and I was too young to see any trains on this line.
As of 2014 the Alderpoint tunnel(s) were still intact, though very neglected. Photographic proof here.
I really don't think we will ever see a train north of Willits again. Most of the tunnels are caved in or in need of major work. Island Mt. will have to be bypassed as the whole mountain has shifted. The roadbed is pretty much gone. The rail was worn out long ago, and what is left of the ties is just trash. A 100% rebuild is needed to run trains north. The other trouble of course is there are no more customers, most of the mills because of lack of rail transportation are vacant lots. No customer base means no one is going to spend money to rebuild the line. I know this is rather a dull outlook. Out side of the occasional mention of making a new port in Eureka there is no hope for the railroad. Even then the talk the last time about a new port was to build the railroad over the mountains to meet the UP over near Redding. That seems as far fetched as rebuilding the line that is there.
Anyway I took the photo in the late 80s. I stopped my engine and stood on the front deck to take the photo. I don't remember if we are waiting on the track gang to bust up that rock up on the curve or not.
what year was this taken? It is rather sad that this tunnel is collapsed now, and the tracks are slowly fading away. Let's make sure that this is not just a memory that is long since past, and get the trains running up north again!
