That is what railroading is all about.  Respect for history.

What board?  The all-aboard???

Yes it was a tradition in the fall for the NWP to haul Sonoma, Mendocino and probably Napa county fruit too down to the bay in whatever rail cars were available to then put the cars on the rail ferries (ATSF?) and ship over to the rail dock next to pier 39.  Those cars would then be picked up by the SF Short line and deliver to the foot of Columbus where a big crowd of Italians were ready with their boxes to purchase wine grapes to take home and set up to make their wine to use for the next years.  

Sometimes called "Dago Red".

This picture keeps popping up on the "main" screen when I go to the  w-site and it is a study in contrasts.  There are these over 60 year old, well tagged with grafitti units being pulled by a gray ghost locomotive that still has the mid 20th RR term "radio equipped" painted on its side.  All of this going past a well manicured vineyard in its end of season color.  I'd be curious to know the history of that boxcar and whether it ever carried Sonoma wine grapes down to Tiburon and then the San Francisco waterfront for the Italians in the City to make their own wine.  If so it is a shame to loose it.

I image that the caboose has quite a bit of value.  I was afraid to hear when the notice was first posted, that the 1922 lease had expired and was going the way of 1322.

I have been told that originally it may have been an overnight express car.
