The system that SMART/NWP uses is called E-ATC, "Enhanced Automatic Train Control" and matches the 4 key requirements of PTC. E-ATC uses high frequency code through the rails instead of a GPS bases system like the most class 1 railroads. Currently only the 2009 is equipped and tested, but does not operate with it turned on yet.

I don't have a date for the last time 1922 pull freight, but I posted a picture here on the site late last year (2018) of a forlorn 1922 parked in the Shellville cage when I drove out there to see what was happening as Jake Parks had left the NWP but John Williams was still in charge.
What I was told was that it would be too expensive to retrofit 1922 with ATC which was coming as a mandatory requirement by the FRA to operate NWP locos on the SMART RoW so she was being mothballed or whatever is the word for locomotives.
I truly miss that sound of an old-school diesel revving up to generate sufficient electricity for the traction motors.

The last time that I know 1922 operated was at the end of 2016, maybe a bit in January 2017.
Looks like the "Grey Ghost" is starting to appear on 1922 again. When is the last time she was used?
