There is a good status update in the Press Democrat today re: the reopening of the line north of Windsor.  Basically there is no money identified for this project including the "$50 million to $75 million" for a new bridge over the Russian River into Healdsburg.

But find the bridge issue moot at least for getting to Healdsburg.  The River is just at the outskirts of town and just accross the river from the station.  The line could be built up to the river and have a shuttle or short walk into the town.  BTW that walk would be shorter than the walk from the new Larkspur station to the ferry terminal there.

RE: spurs, SMART has resisted replacing spurs during the rebuilds.

The reason why I am asking that question is because i'm not sure if SMART, if they ever do go to Healdsburg, would rip out all of the spurs entirely, or leave them in place.

Been a while since I've been in this group. If NWP ever manages to get up to Healdsburg, would they be interested in servicing the industries up there? Maybe even a possible wine train north to Cloverdale once all is in operating order again?

Does anyone know if fire has encroached onto NCRA/NWP/SMART properties?

Thanks for the link Richard!  The letter writing campaign sounds great, just let me know and I and my family will do what we can!  I am so anxious to get the line running to Ukiah and Redwood Valley, and eventually Willits I can taste it, especially when I see news stories every day of shortlines and passenger ops getting Tiger Grants, lines that sat dormant for 20 years or more starting up again, lines that were pulled up being relaid, etc.  This area is beautiful, but the glacial speed at which things move is as annoying as watching grass grow, and the "unique" people in Marin County don't help things.  Text me too anytime, at 707-752-7449 or 707-689-9546.

Right now I have to believe that the NCRA and NWP crew are busy with the preparation of the documents for a TIGER grant from the USDOT.  If you wnat to know more about this and the requirements that they have to fulfill, go to:

I absolutely agree with you about the need and suggest that in two months we may want to organize a letter writing campaign once the documents have been submitted. 

Sadly it is all very political right now about railroads.

Time is sure wasting, it's time to get service going to Healdsburg, Cloverdale, Ukiah, Redwood Valley and WIllits going ASAP! Our economy and the businesses up here need it open, the lumber, gravel and other industries especially.  I am working on contacting the North Coast Railroad here in Ukiah, as well as our Congressman, Jared Huffman.  I really appreciate you helping on this, you deserve some major kudos Rich!

That's an awesome idea on the conference call with Jake and the NWP guys, if and when you can get it going, let me know and I and my dad will both call in and help out!

I was up in the Valley today and in Geyserville along the RoW and see so many opportunities for an aggressive short line.  Do you think they have the perspective to "think outside of the box" which is what those TIGER slides are encouraging? 

I sent my ideas to Jake on what I thought the DOT was looking for in awarding TIGER funds but I never received a response.  I don't need his response but I expect he and John to be creative in defining what they are proposing to do with their grant.

You know that Sonoma and somewhat Mendocino counties are some of the leading areas of the US in their experimentation in areas like sustainability, design and of course agriculture and all of that must be included in the grant.  They are also high growth areas that need heavy materials for this growth and that is best hauled by rail.

I was once again overwhelmed in the traffic on a weekday by all of the trucks going north on 101 hauling items that could easily go via rail.

As I have written so many times before, those members of this site interested seriously in promoting the success of the NWP MUST write their state and federal legislators and ask them to support an NWP/NCRA TIGER grant (assuming that they do submit).

BTW do you think that Jake would be willing to have a short conference call to discuss how we might do this?  Do I need to go down to the Woodside Consulting office again?

Time is a'wasting.

Thanks Rich! Post this too in my Mendocino County new NWP fans page too. Let's get this line open to Ukiah and Willits asap!
