<p>Despite my searching, I couldn't find this car type on any list or directory. However, searching "coil car" or "steel coil car" yields image results of cars similar to these. I assume the covers are to keep moisture from rusting the coils.</p>

<p>I'm pretty sure they're coil cars. They're special flatcars with covers that hold steel coil (from 4-6 underneath the metal cover.) They're pretty rare on the west coast.</p>
