California Rail Productions video "Trains at the Stockton Diamonds".

In this wonderful video, four mystery cars appear together at 10:48.  I have occasionally seen these or similar cars in other videos, but still don't know what they are for or what they are called.  Anyone know?  Scale test car?

I'm pretty sure they're coil cars. They're special flatcars with covers that hold steel coil (from 4-6 underneath the metal cover.) They're pretty rare on the west coast.

Ian:  you are a winner!

Despite my searching, I couldn't find this car type on any list or directory.  However, searching "coil car" or "steel coil car" yields image results of cars similar to these.  I assume the covers are to keep moisture from rusting the coils.

Thank you!  Another mystery solved!
