I haven't seen this posted here yet...Sierra Pacific Industries a day or two ago announced they are closing their Arcata sawmill and eliminating its 120+ jobs. This was one of the Emerson family's first sawmills, they've been operating it for around five decades. This closure leaves Schmidbauer Lumber in Eureka and what's left of the old Scotia plant as the last two former NWP/NCR forest product shippers remaining in operation.
This plant was never a big shipper, averaging 1-3 cars a night. First time in a long time that one won't be able to find a sawmill blade whining someplace on the north end of Humboldt Bay.
